John Carpenter
Biografía
Director de cine y guionista estadounidense. Sus mejores trabajos son representaciones sombrías de la civilización moderna. Hijo de un violinista y profesor de piano, nació el 16 de enero de 1948 en Carthage (Nueva York) y creció en Bowling Green (Kentucky). Tras asistir a la Western Kentucky University, en 1968 inició los estudios de cine en la Universidad de California, donde rodó toda una serie de cortometrajes. Su primer largometraje fue la parodia de ciencia ficción Dark Star (1973), una producción de bajo presupuesto que se convirtió en película de culto. Asalto a la comisaría del distrito 13 (1976) describe la ocupación de una comisaría por jóvenes violentos. Posteriormente, saltó a la fama como especialista en películas de ciencia ficción y de terror de estética convencional y efectista, que en algunos casos tuvieron un gran éxito comercial. Entre ellas figuran La noche de Halloween (1978), que lanzó a la actriz Jamie Lee Curtis, La niebla (1980), 1997: Rescate en Nueva York (1981), con Kurt Russell en el papel de Snake Plissken, La cosa (1982), Christine (1983, basada en una novela de Stephen King), Starman (1984), con Jeff Bridges, El príncipe de las tinieblas (1987), Están vivos (1988), En la boca del miedo (1994), 2013: Rescate en L.A. (1996), una continuación de 1997: Rescate en Nueva York, y Vampiros de John Carpenter (1999). Sus filmes son de calidad muy variable, y en algunos de ellos los efectos especiales priman sobre los matices en los personajes y la acción.
