En el año 2017, el mundo se ha colapsado por culpa de una grave crisis económica. La primera potencia del planeta, los Estados Unidos de América, se hallan inmersos en el caos y el desconcierto. Para salir del atolladero, el gobierno inventa un videojuego que se emite por televisión y que logra altas cotas de audiencia. Consiste en soltar a varios convictos para que corran hacia la libertad mientras son perseguidos por auténticas máquinas de matar. Entre los participantes se encuentra Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenneger), dispuesto a aprovechar la oportunidad que le han ofrecido.
